City minutes document Bellgate's removal and required return

An April Arts Commission update describes secure storage and periodic inspections during redevelopment, with reinstallation tied to construction completion.

Bellgate, Lee Kelly's steel sculpture outside the former John Danz Theatre, has a documented route back to public view after redevelopment. Bellevue Arts Commission minutes from April 1, 2026 record staff's report that the work had been temporarily removed ahead of construction and that contractual assurances require its reinstallation when development is complete.

Staff described secure storage and periodic inspections during the intervening construction period. The minutes tie reinstallation to the building schedule; they do not supply a return date, an exact future placement or a storage address. This is an account of an April update, not evidence of a new removal in October.

A 1989 photograph in the University of Washington Libraries' collection documents Bellgate beside the theatre. The April minutes add a specific preservation commitment to that history: the artwork's absence during construction is temporary under the arrangement described to the commission. Its eventual location and installation date remain matters for a later public update.
